Job Summary: The Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager (DMM) – Sundries is a senior commercial leader responsible for defining and executing the end-to-end merchandising strategy across BJ’s sundries business. This role owns the full P&L for assigned categories and is accountable for driving profitable growth through disciplined assortment strategy, pricing and promotional effectiveness, inventory productivity, and strategic supplier partnerships. The VP–DMM ensures BJ’s offering delivers exceptional value, quality, and relevance for members while strengthening BJ’s competitive position in the marketplace. This leader builds and develops high-performing merchandising teams, establishes clear accountability, and cultivates the next generation of leaders. Through strong supplier governance, operational rigor, and cross-functional collaboration, the role ensures sundries programs are executed with excellence — driving member loyalty, traffic, basket growth, and sustainable long-term enterprise value.

Responsibilities

  • Own and set the long-range merchandising vision and category strategy for all assigned businesses across all channels, aligned with corporate growth, margin, and member value objectives.
  • Lead the development of comprehensive category strategies including assortment architecture, pricing and promotional strategy, Own Brand penetration, and product lifecycle management across categories.
  • Serve as the P&L owner for the division, accountable for sales, profit, inventory productivity, and category performance; proactively identify risks and opportunities and implement corrective actions to deliver or exceed financial plans.
  • Drive margin improvement through strategic sourcing/CMP, supplier negotiations, pricing discipline, salvage/markdown reduction, and promotional optimization.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of Senior/Category Managers, Associate Merchants, and Assistant Merchants; foster a culture of clear goals, high performance expectations, and strong accountability.
  • Lead end-to-end assortment planning across categories, leveraging data, member insights, and market trends to deliver compelling, value-driven assortments that drive traffic and basket growth.
  • Partner closely with Planning & Allocation, Digital, Supply Chain, Own Brands, Marketing, Merchandise Operations, and Finance to ensure seamless execution of programs across all channels.
  • Collaborate with Assortment & Space Planning and Club Operations teams to create high-impact merchandising strategies that enhance the member shopping experience while optimizing inventory flow, lead times, and replenishment.
  • Build and maintain strategic supplier partnerships across national brands and own brand suppliers to deliver high-quality products, compelling value, and category innovation for BJ’s members.

Requirements

  • 15+ years merchandising experience in a large format grocery, value, or mass retailer.
  • Demonstrated strategic and financial success at senior merchant levels in fast-paced, growth environments, especially those requiring transformational category management.
  • Excellent leadership skills with a strong focus on talent development, communication, empowerment and engagement; comfort with ambiguity and guiding teams through change.
  • Positive, sustained impact in complex environments, where collaboration and influence were critical to success.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative and analytical thinking, intuition, and data to drive assortment evolution including exploring new lines of business and partnerships.
  • High level of comfort engaging with and presenting to an executive-level audience.
